VSPT Wine Group continues to strengthen its work with indigenous communities in southern Chile, by being awarded public funding under the ‘Red Proveedores Indígenas’ programme of the Chilean Economic Development and Production Corporation (CORFO). The stewardship of these funds will allow for the continuation of the collaborative work that got underway in 2015 with Mapuche communities in Malleco, in the Araucanía Region, to produce the first Pinot Noir of Mapuche origin: Tayu 1865.
The project aims to promote full autonomy for the 11 families producing grapes for this wine and their privately owned 27.5 hectares of vineyards. The programme, co-financed by CORFO, will give continuity to the project through the implementation of a sustainable supply model, which will enable knowledge and resources to be transferred, so that this community can thrive independently and to ensure its long-term sustainability.
The project is expected to run for three years, with annual renewals, providing tools and ongoing technical advice through training that will cover critical areas of viticulture and business management, including vineyard management, pest and frost control, and the use of agricultural machinery, all with a focus on sustainability.
A business management and administration plan will also be implemented, including inventory control, budget management and the development of soft skills for labour conflict resolution. Priority will be given as well to health and safety training, with modules on the safe handling of agrochemicals and the responsible consumption of alcohol.
“The training and technical support aims to empower producers in Malleco, transforming them into independent entrepreneurs with strengthened management skills. Through these types of programmes, we reaffirm our commitment to sustainable development and the creation of shared value, working together with local communities to generate a positive and lasting impact in the Araucanía region,” said Carolina Gotuzzo, VSPT Wine Group Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director.
